Shower Spiders

I'm just now calm enough to write about my horrifying shower story from this morning.

As usual, I sat and looked at Facebook for an hour or so, calmly sipping my quota of 2 cups of coffee and then decided to jump start my busy day with a nice, hot shower.

I turned on the water and jumped in. Shampoo in hair, I looked up and . . . oh my GAWD, a ginormouse spider had, overnight, spun a huge cobweb in the corner of my shower! Yes, I know he was just doing his spider work, but in my shower?

He was too far up for me to grab and besides, no kleenex, that would have been handy, but not in the shower. So, I did the next best thing. I sprayed the spider with the removeable shower head. Hit that 8 legger with a blast of expensive Northern California water and then, no more spider!

No body on the floor of the shower. No body up in the destroyed web. Oh my GAWD! Spider in my hair or ?? And worse than that, angry spider!!!

I jumped around, swatted all over my hair. Rinsed it dozens of times. No body. Where the heck could a giant spider just disappear like that unless he was hitchiking on me!!!

I turned the shower off and majorly dried off, inspecting my hair for a lurking, angry spider! No spider, anywhere. I brushed my hair dozens of times. I blow dried it frantically.

I never did find the missing spider. He's probably lurking for another try at me tomorrow.
I wonder if he is sent by our water supplier here in the Bay Area so that we only take short showers and conserve water.

Lesson learned? Never squirt a shower spider while you are in the shower. <shiver> Still checking my hair for a lurking shower spider. So far, so good. I hope he didn't have friends!

Playing games!

It's cold outside. Windy. Very chilly for my California blood. This morning it was reported by someone (not me) that when he went out to the car, there was a dusting of snow. Seriously, I am not impressed. I have declared that I will not be exiting this nice warm house until we leave on Friday.

I like being warm. I'm like a lizard. Bear and I are enjoying the fireplace and the various blankies in the living room. We like our hot coffee and playing cards, Scrabble, and Bananagrams. Of course David, as usual, has been winning most things, but that might be that Bear is not such a good partner (sorry Bear).

I'm going to practice Bananagrams later and maybe Bear and I can win the next hand. Needless to say we are having a very good Thanksgiving holiday, surrounded by friends and family.

I hope your holiday is fun and full of family and good memories.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Turkeys at the airport AND on your table!

So Bear and I made it to the airport. No one commented or stared at me for having a stuffed bear sticking out of my computer bag. He did not need a ticket to fly and he was not required to show anyone his I.D. Which is good because he has none. He was x-rayed, which didn't bother him. He was very calm and acted like a traveling pro. Not so much for the rest of the airport. It was a zoo. People everywhere. Lots of whining and complaining, and not just from those of the baby or toddler variety. Obviously everyone had forgotten it was Thanksgiving!
Bear held my passport for a while (he has none).

At least that's what I was thinking, but then I remembered that just getting to the airport was a heart attack . . . we stopped to get gas before heading to the airport. About 10 minutes down the freeway, David starts digging around in the front seat. He starts screaming, "STOP!"

Luckily Chris, a very good driver, did not stop in the middle of the freeway, but instead headed for the nearest exit. David, in a panic, freaking out, yelling, "Oh my GAWD! I left my wallet on the gas pump! Oh my freaking . . ." well, you know. Panic ensued in our SUV. We were all feeling that panicky, what-do-we-do-now feeling.

Chris headed back up the freeway and we zoomed along, heading for the gas station. Praying the wallet was still there or if some toad had taken it, he had at least left the all import driver's license (you know, for I.D. at the airport!) We screeched to a halt at the gas station and David jumped out and ran into the store . . . thank goodness some kind soul had turned the wallet in AND everything was in it. It was a Thanksgiving miracle.

Even with all that, we made it to the airport in plenty of time. Good thing we did. The line to the counter was short and moved along. Security? Not so much. People not listening to the instructions. Cutting in line. (I let them, whatever, seemed like maybe he was late for his plane or something. Just would have been nice if he had asked. Just saying.) Milling around, grabbing their shoes and coats and other belongings from the conveyor belt. The TSA agents were very nice though and we made it through the line with nary a hitch.

At our gate, we sighed with a breath of relief. We had time for a Starbucks and David started working on his Suduko. The plane boarded a little bit late, but we made our connection in L.A. Actually the rest of our airport traveling adventure was quite eventless. I even slept on the last leg of the journey and I think Bear did too. He likes traveling and he's having so much fun at Gramma's house! I hope he doesn't eat all the turkey dinner we're planning. Just as he remembers to be thankful. It's Thanksgiving after all!

Flying with Turkeys and Bear

Gobble, gobble! It's that time of year when everyone wants to go visit family and friends in far off places, like Missouri.

I love to travel, don't get me wrong, but traveling during Thanksgiving is kind of like traveling to outer space. Just to help me have a "friend" with me (besides my family), Bear will be making the journey with me.

First of all there's the packing to tackle. Luckily, Bear needs to do no packing. He's a come as he is bear . . . embarrassingly so, he has no clothes, except his darling black gingham fancy bow. I however, need to pack.

I live in sunny California. The weather drops to below 60 and we all grab winter gear. Big baggy coats, scarves, mittens, hats . . . it looks like there's a ski resort in the vicinity. I've lived in California for most of my life, so I have to admit I'm one of the ones who will wear a scarf and my "winter coat" out to Target. My winter coat though is really more of a heavier weight rain coat and when the temperature drops into the 40's (which it does in Northern California), I'm cold.

So in packing for the trip I have taken all of my sweaters (3) and all of my long sleeve shirts (4). I managed to locate my scarf and mittens, surprisingly not buried in the closet, and I have shoved all of them in the suitcase, along with warm socks and other assorted gear. I'm going to layer all of these things under my woefully lacking Missouri jacket and hope for the best. Snow is forecasted, of course, and I am delighted at the prospect of freezing in the land of Missouri. At least I have Bear, he has a warm coat and is quite toasty to hug, thank goodness. He will fit under my jacket, just saying.

We're off for the airport now. Bear is excited, he's never been on an airplane before and I have to watch that he doesn't wander off and get lost like Paddington in the infamous childrens' stories. I'm sure lots of adventures await and I am taking notes for future posts. Bon Voyage <shiver>!

It's been too long . . .

There are some things, like dental appointments, that you don't necessarily enjoy, you might even put off actually going, but when I saw I hadn't written a thing in over a month I was shocked. "This is unexceptable," said the little voice in my head, always writing that perfect short story. Like the dental appointment, my stories weren't actually making it to the page. This morning as I tried desperately for sleep I wrote in my head about Oscar the rat we had when the younger kids were still in elementary school.

Now that I'm writing this story down I can see I need to ask my daughter Megan, illustrator of other books, to illustrate this. She draws the cutest rats. Anyway, a Thursday story to either entertain or terrorize you, depending on your view of fancy rats (not the roof rats in our attic we called Terminex for.)

Oscar was a lucky rat and he knew it. The lady came into the store many times to say hello to him as he desperately tried to get comfy on top of his small igloo house in his small cage. One day the lady came into the store wearing a bright pink sweater. She brought with her the lady jingling her keys, the lady who one always slipped him a few extra carrots, because she knew the spunky, younger rats always got picked first, leaving him, all alone in his cage.

The lady in the pink sweater put him on her shoulder and they shopped for stuff. His heart beat a little bit faster as he smelled her vanilla smell. Was it her hair? He sniffed it and even nibbled a few strands. Luckily she did not notice. She put a new big water bottle with a little spigot on the end in the shopping cart . . . oh boy, for him? Oscar ran to her other shoulder and noticed her dangling ear ring. He playfully nibbled on her ear and she giggled. She tossed some chewie toys and a bag of gourmet rat food into the cart . . . oh boy, for him? He ran to her other shoulder and watched as she added a new food dish, not as exciting, but for sure for him. Finally she threw a bag of the softest litter into the cart, making everything all wobbly for a moment. He hung on with his cute little toes and thought . . . oh boy, all that was HIS?

Other rats went home in boxes with holes in the lid and sides, but not Oscar. Oscar the rat was a lucky rat, as he rode home on the lady's shoulder. He ran from side to side, looking out the window as the other cars zipped by. Some people laughed when they saw Oscar perched there. Some people were horrified.

When they got home he sat in the bathroom floor and waited for her. He nibbled on the door, but it seemed like a lot of work, so he curled up in the corner and took a little nap, head tucked under his belly, all toasty.

When the lady came to get him from the bathroom he saw just what kind of a lucky rat he REALLY was. His cage had THREE spacious levels. One, two, three. The lady had put his food dish on one level, an extra big igloo on the bottom . . . oh boy it was all for him, sleep on top of the green igloo, or sleep in the igloo, his nest was complete.

As he explored past his igloo, he found the little toys the lady had purchased. A chewy wooden carrot, a crinkly round ball, and yummiest of all, little pink strawberry yogurt drops.

He explored his new cage mansion, sniffing all the corners, he ate all the strawberry yogurt drops, and most of his food. He hunched over his bowl and looked around past his cage. He heard other stirrings and knew there were other critters to meet on his next adventure OUT of his cage. He liked IN his cage but his little ratty brain was curious about what the rest of the world held.

The night after eating, nibbling on toys, and running up and down the ladders, he stretched out, with his tail next to him and slept soundly, dreaming of other friends, more ladders to climb and stuff to chew on. Oscar's adventures in his new forever home was just beginning.

Stamping at La Vita Bella's

My time in Colorado is coming to an end, but not before some more fun stamping adventures. This time we stamped at an adorable coffee shop called La Vita Bella's in downtown Longmont. The building is really neat and old. The coffee is super tasty. I had a mocha that made stamping SO much fun. Nothing like a good cuppa coffee with chocolate and stamping. It seems to go together.

We made cards this time with bugs and birds. Below are some samples of what the ladies came up with. They seemed to know what they were doing . . . they turned out GREAT!

Have a stampy day!

Stamp & Chat with a Caribou!

Yesterday, my Colorado adventure continued with a Caribou adventure. My friends, JoAnn and Kim, joined me at a local Caribou Coffee shop and we not only had a great coffee adventure (well, I had iced tea since it was so hot outside), but we had a fun crafting adventure as well.

We made some fun things that I brought along; a fun necklace, an adorable bug box filled, not with bugs, but Ghirardelli chocolates, and of course a fun bird card.

We all were very relaxed after our craft therapy and felt very crafty and caffeinated. :-)

Then I discovered the bear foot stool and decided to have some rest time in front of the fake fire. Stamping is hard work!

Fun friend time!
